オポッサムは、外見は少しネズミに似ているが、カンガルーやコアラなどと同様に腹に育児嚢（いくじのう）という袋をもつ有袋類であり、ネズミに似た外見をしていることから、フクロネズミとも呼ばれる。

They're immune to pit-viper venom, don't you know.

フクロネズミは12〜14日程度という非常に短い妊娠期間を経て、胎児の状態で出産される。生まれた子は、ただちに這って育児嚢にたどり着き、嚢の内部にある乳首から乳を吸って過ごすようになる。しばらくは育児嚢で育てられるが、大きくなると育児嚢から出て、親の背中で過ごすことが多くなる。親が子を背負う姿から、コモリネズミの別名が使われることもある。

It is thought they were introduced to Virginia 'as FOOD'. Yuk.
